Advice from Real Mothers

As soon as you are pregnant, people dish you out advice around pregnancy and parenting as though you’re just waiting to hear what they have to say. Some of it will be great, some of it… well let’s just say you’ll be polite but you’ll quickly discard those remarks from the good old memory bank.

I decided to ask a bunch of women on a mummy Facebook group I’ve joined (yes you read that right), what was the best piece of advice they received around pregnancy and parenting. I figured that this would be a great way to get a variety of responses from women of all walks of life.

Out of the 75 women that were kind enough to take the time to comment, I narrowed down the advice into sixteen points that I hope other mums will find useful – there really are some awesome bits of info here for all to use as they choose fit!;

  1. Every baby is different try not to compare.”
  2. “Trust your instincts. You know your baby like no-one else does.”
  3. “When its tough remember, ‘this too shall pass’.”
  4. Listen to people’s advice but only take from it what suits you and your baby.”
  5. Labour – go with the flow, don’t have a birth plan that is too set in stone – you never know what will happen – expect the worst and you might be pleasantly surprised.”
  6. Don’t sweat the small stuff. If it’s not going to actually affect you don’t stress and take it out on the kids. Remember they make mistakes.”
  7. Breastfeeding can be really hard for some people. It’s made out to be the most natural thing but sometimes it just doesn’t work. Do what works for you and bubs and if you can’t feed well don’t feel like a failure, just do what you’ve got to do.”
  8. “Routine! Praise the good, ignore the bad, and discipline what’s necessary.”
  9. “When it’s night time and your baby wakes, keep the light dim and don’t talk to your baby.
  10. “Your baby can’t read so throw away the book and do what is right for you and your bub.”
  11. When baby naps you nap! Especially when you’ve been up all night. Visitors can wait!
  12. “If your baby is crying and you can’t settle him/her, just put baby in the cot, close the door to the room and sit for a bit and have some time to just take a deep breath and calm down, go back fresh again. When I was upset, my baby was too.
  13. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
  14. “Don’t limit noise! Noise helps baby to sleep through anything!
  15. It’s never a waste of time staring at your baby, it goes so fast!”
  16. “It’s tough, frustrating, tiring and challenging. But it is the most satisfying, rewarding and incredible job in the world. Motherhood – nothing compares to the unconditional love you will feel.”
